Fund Raising Time of Year

Fall is in the air and so is the start to Troop 1’s annual fund raising activities.

Experienced Troop 1 Scouting families know that sign up sheets for the Christmas Tree Lot, kits for selling TrailsEnd Popcorn and Price lists and order forms for Christmas Wreath sales will soon be available at all Troop meetings.

New Troop 1 Scouting families may be asking, what is this fund raising all about and how does my scout and our family participate?

Let’s begin with a brief description of each fund raising activity and how it benefits our Scouts and Troop 1.

Popcorn sales are a district wide activity with the profits from popcorn sales benefiting the Scenic Trail Council and the individual Scouts selling the popcorn. Scouts selling popcorn earn money for their personal accounts and have the option of selecting prizes or having funds credited towards Summer Camp. There is no limit to amount of popcorn a scout may sell.

Christmas Wreath sales are great way for our Scouts to earn money for their personal accounts. Wreath sales average a 50% profit to the Scout! Wreath sales kick off with a grace period that allows Scouts to contact their customers from prior years. After the grace period is over, all customers are fair game. There is no limit to number of wreathes a scout may sell.

Our Christmas tree sale is the only fundraiser Troop 1 does for the benefit of the Troop. The Christmas tree fundraiser pays for all Troop 1 equipment, equipment repairs, scout awards, insurance, fees and trailer maintenance. Our tree lot opens the Friday after Thanksgiving and closes a few days before Christmas or when all the trees are gone. Scout families volunteer to man the Christmas tree lot for two-hour shifts. The two-hour shifts run from approximately 5pm to 7pm on week nights, 10am to 8pm on Saturdays, and 10am to 6pm on Sundays. We always try to have two families work each shift so everyone is asked to take 3 to 4 turns at the Christmas tree lot.

Troop 1 Committee members currently in charge of these fund raising activities are:

Mrs. Hancock is our fund raising Chairperson. She recruits fund raising coordinators and assists the coordinators in accomplishing the fund raising goals.

Mr. Marsh is our Treasurer. He pays our fund raising bills, is given fund raising receipts for deposit, and updates the Scouts accounts for their fund raising activities.

Mrs. Salem is our popcorn sales coordinator. She will attend Northern District popcorn meetings and obtain and distribute all the marketing materials and popcorn order forms for the annual popcorn sales drive. Mrs. Salem will compile popcorn orders, coordinate delivery of the Troop’s popcorn order to Gaylord, coordinate the distribution of popcorn orders to individual scouts, and receives all moneys collected for popcorn sales. Mrs. Salem may have the popcorn order forms at the September 24th Court of Honor.

Mrs. Sova is our Christmas Wreath sales coordinator. She compiles all wreath orders and coordinates the purchase and delivery of the wreaths. Mrs. Sova arranges for the wreaths to be temporarily stored in Gaylord and distributed to scouts. Mrs. Sova receives all moneys collected for wreath sales. Mrs. Sova may have the wreath sales order forms at the September 24th Court of Honor.

Mr. Neff is our Christmas tree sales coordinator. He obtains permission to use the K-Mart parking lot, files a solicitation Permit with the City of Gaylord, arranges for the purchase and delivery of 325 Christmas trees, recruits a cast of thousands to set-up and tear down the tree lot, and coordinates the tree lot volunteer schedule. Mr. Neff may have the Christmas tress lot volunteers schedule at the Court of Honor. The best times go fast so it is recommended to sign up early and sign up often.

Scouts or parents may contact any of these adult leaders, the Scoutmaster, or Committee Chairman with specific questions about our fund raising activities.

Meeting Notes

By Donald P.
Troop 1 Gaylord Webmaster

Scout Meeting
8/30/06

The meeting started with talk about Frank’s Farm and what could have been improved.
Clean up was at the top of the list, everyone agreed that the duty roster needed to be planned better and followed. This includes cooks being up early and clean up crew ready. The hardest thing at camp to clean was bacon.

The H. brothers were introduced to the troop as new members.

When asked what everyone liked about scouting there were many of the same answers.
Everything
Camping
Meet new people
Cooking
Pancakes
Hessel

Then we had the vote for responsibilities in the troop, each current member explained the duties of each position. These were the results…
Senior Patrol Leader SPL Doug
Quarter Master Nate
Chaplin’s Aid Butters
Librarian Caleb
Historian Kory
Scribe/Webmaster Brett
These will be sworn into office at the Court of Honor on September 24th 2006.

Hessel was explained to the scouts as being three weeks from now. We make up games and play all weekend with a dance on Saturday night.

The Treasurer explained the need for scouts to help out at the Sportsman Club parking cars and made a sign up sheet, he needs six per shift. If interested contact Scoutmaster.

Scout Master announcements included reading of a page from the book Seven Secrets to Success. One was today’s success is the enemy of tomorrows success.

Seven Secrets of Success

There is no secret of success.
Success is for everyone.
Your life becomes better only when you become better.
There is no success without sacrifice.
Success is achieved in inches, not miles.
The greatest enemy of tomorrow's success is today's success.
No advice on success works unless you do.

Franks Farm

By Donald P.
Troop 1 Gaylord Webmaster
Last weekend we went to Franks Farm it was a lot of fun, the thing I liked best about it was Sunday when I made the best pancakes ever. Everyone wanted one. Some of our troop went on a canoeing trip and it was a blast. The rest of the troop that went, who didn’t go canoeing, worked on metalworking and other stuff. We went canoeing at 9:00 am and came back for lunch. After lunch we went geo-cashing. That’s when you take a GPS and look for coordinates given and search out more from there. Then was free time and Sunday we were going home.

Every Picture Has a Story

Thanks to Mr. Oakley, the web site has many new pictures to post. The photo album is as recent as NOAC 2006 and goes back as far as Summer camp 2004. From time to time pictures from Mr. Oakley's photo album will be posted.

The challenge will be for someone in the photo to email Troop 1 with a description of the photo and the event it was taken at. The photo and its description will then receive their own post.

Here are three pictures to get things started.

Young Eagles Flight

By Donald P.
Troop 1 Gaylord Webmaster

One of the highlights of summer was on June 24, 2006 when I was able to fly in a Cessna 170B. This was part of a Young Eagles program to give us a chance to see if piloting would be something of interest for me in the future.

The flight was awesome. We went really high and everything was measured in knots. First we went up and then he showed us how to turn. I never knew there were foot pedals in a plane. I did get to fly a little and he said I did a good job. There were many gauges and knobs inside the plane.

It was a great experience and I hope every scout takes advantage next year.

Boy’s Life August Review

By Donald P.
Troop 1 Gaylord Webmaster
Beat the Stink
Sniff, sniff. It’s great to be seen and heard, but no one – especially girls – wants to suffer a smelly you. Taking a shower everyday and using deodorant don’t only help get girls but help result in better self-confidence. Also you will have better health.
As you mature your body will begin to act in all kinds of new ways. Many of these will involve pungent odors. All kinds of things make you sweat as a teen so take showers daily.

The Ultimate Test
They have spent the winter getting ready. Now these boys and girls face their toughest challenge; 35 miles down MAD River.

They call it “The Mad”, partly because it’s short for Madawaska River, and partly because you have to be crazy to tackle it’s mix of grueling flat water and fast moving white water. Troop 849 was the first troop to go down the Mad River. They had fun and a couple of spills but made it out all right.
