Troop 1, Gaylord
November 2009
We wish all of you scouts and scout families a very happy and joyful Thanksgiving season. We are sending along a few notes to supplement the troop calendar handouts and notes passed out last week.
This Saturday and Sunday is the Troop lock in at the Community Center on South Center in Gaylord. We will be handing out permission slips at the troop meeting this week for guest and Weblos 5 scouts—be sure those are filled out if you bring a guest. Otherwise, most troop members have a part A and C and you should be all set. Bring your electronics and sports gear and we will have a blast. There is a troop permission slip attached to this newsletter for the lock in. Remember no earlier than 8:00PM Saturday the 21st, picked up no later than 8:00AM Sunday the 22d.
The wreaths are in. . . and Picked Up—except for one scout’s. Money can be turned in the week after Thanksgiving. Don’t wait, especially if your clients have not paid in advance. By our count there are 4 organizations selling wreaths this season. If they forget you, you could be left with a wreath and no money. Good job scouts.
Popcorn money must be turned in the week after Thanksgiving—final. Our money is due to STC, so help us out here. You have two weeks to get it delivered—take that good job and turn it into scout account savings.
Kiwanis Swim Party at the Sportsplex the 24th of November. Arrive at 6:45PM, swim for an hour, eat pizza, thank the Kiwanis crew for the party, their support and head home for Thanksgiving. If you need to finish your swim merit badge from summer camp, contact Mr. Oakley and he will assist at the party. We have 5 scouts signed up so far—if you are going next week, email Mr. Arndt or Mr. Neff. If we don’t have at least 10 scouts, I will tell them to cancel—just not enough kids to do all of that work.
Shortwave radio merit badge sessions continue this and next week. Books should be in shortly. We will set up a tabletop at the lock in for those of you who want to pursue that while we are there. I also have some other publications which you might find interesting.
Winter camping at the DAKS, CGATS, January 15-17. This is a classic Troop 1 Trip and the troop sleeps in canvas tent systems with wood stoves. This is a blast—be sure to sign up. Now is the time to ask for that camping gear for Christmas.
February 6th-Council Derby; Cadillac. This is part of the new council wide event program for the 100th anniversary. Like the Klondike but more. Outdoor games, competition and all around good fellowship.Get that gear for Christmas and be ready.
February 27th is our Headlands trip this year. We rent a BIG house on the water in Mac City and party. This is the “bring your electronics” trip of the year. We may have to bring the troop trailer to get all of the gear in. Ask an older scout how they like this trip. Even the adults like this one.
Christmas Party. . . . yes there will be one. Ask your patrol leader.
LOST IT? From week to week we keep a box of stuff that you all leave at the meetings. Books, coats, gym bags, homework. We keep it in the back for each meeting. We have been able to return 1 coat and 2 scout books, two shirts and have given about 25 pounds of clothes to Goodwill. If you lost it at a meeting, we probably have it. If you come to the meetings regularly, you can always retrieve it. We will not chase you down but you are welcome to look at the lost and found at meetings. We will also have the uniform closet at the hall from now on. If you need a shirt or pants, we might have it. Save mom or dad a buck.
Patrol Leader’s Meeting Sunday December 6th at Bagley, 6:30 PM, Troop Committee following at 7:00 PM. Troop staff and patrol leaders should all attend. Among other things, the staff will plan the Christmas party.
Long term dates. The week of June 19th is our summer camp cycle this year. Now is the time to start saving money.
Parents. We thank you for all of your support. Since this is the Holiday season, there are a few reminders to make the New Year go smoother.
Under separate attachment is the schedule for the tree lot sale. Please sign up to attend with your scouts. This event supports the troop for the coming year. All the pins, badges, training and party food and drinks come out of this fund. We will have to work together not only to set up but to operate and tear down.
That’s all for now. This has been handed out as well as posted to the Troop Site. As always, call with questions or comments at 989-732-3307 (office) or 989-732-3464 (night) or email karndt@arndtandassoc.com.
Happy Thanksgiving-
Ken Arndt
