Next week Scout meeting after school, swimming and Holiday party.

Next week is the last time we meet before Christmas break. Our meeting will begin at 3:00 pm at the sportsplex. Scouts should bring $3.00 for the admission to the pool (unless they have that available in their scout account) Scouts should bring their swimsuit, and if they plan to do requirements for a rank advancement they should bring their book.

Parents: The troop will provide sloppy joes, pop, ice cream. I would like a few parents to volunteer to bring something to add to the snack, but we don't need a lot of food. It's just a snack after swimming and a little Holiday cheer. If you can bring something, please comment on Facebook, or email me what you are bringing. (I'm thinking chips, cookies, veggies, or other sides.) Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving!

As I think over the past year, and all the blessings that Boy Scout Troop 1 has to be thankful for, one blessing comes to mind in every activity that I remember. That is the dedication and volunteer spirit of our leaders and parents. Each camping trip is planned, driven, and chaperoned by caring parents and leaders. Every day outing, every service project, each meeting, each group merit badge class, each fundraiser, etc has someone behind the details. Every time I look around, I see jobs getting done that I might have forgotten or didn't have time to do. Someone always has my back! I'm grateful to every leader and parent who give up time with their family to give to the scout family. I'm thankful to the leaders and parents who supported scouting in the past and still come around occasionally to help out even though their scout is full grown. Our scouts benefit from the talents and personalities of the different leaders and parents that give their time.

I spoke to a young scout yesterday about service time. He had volunteered at the Cub Scout Open house, but said his time didn't count because he didn't work, he only played with the cub scouts. He was surprised to hear that the time he spent play and entertaining the scouts is service time! Just being there with a friendly face and a smile is sometimes all the encouragement that a young scout needs to succeed. Look at the smiles on our scout's faces and know that you played a role in that happiness.

Thank you all again for the excellent work that you did at the Kiwanis Open House. I saw all the nice things that you did that evening to help the scouts host a great evening for the Kiwanis Club. Today I will think of you all when I count my blessings.

Yours in Scouting,
Julia Bushong, Scoutmaster

Religious patches available to earn

Troop 1 always encourages scouts to enhance their Duty to God by earning a religious emblem. In addition to the religious knot or medal that can be worn on the uniform, there are also series of fun patches that can be earned as well. The Footsteps of American Saints program sponsored by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting is one way for you to earn some patches and learn about the saints.
Recently Bishop Steven Raica, of the Diocese of Gaylord, attended the National Catholic Youth Conference and brought back some beautiful patches as an example of what can be earned in scouting. Contact your scoutmaster or your religious coordinators Mrs. Engel and Mrs. Sharkey to find out more information. Any Boy Scout or Cub Scout can earn these patches.

Design the Lock-in Patch!

Our 20th Annual Sportsplex Lock-in will be March 19, 2016. As always, we need to create a customized patch for the lock-in. Would you like to help? Please submit your ideas to Scoutmaster by January 6th. Your initials (or your name if it's short) could be included inconspicuously in the patch as a credit to your ideas. See the attached flyer and put your artistic talents to work!

Rank requirement changes as of 2016

Here's some light reading for you....

In 2016 there will be some upcoming changes to scout ranks.  It is important for everyone to take a look at the ranks that will directly affect them or their scout.

The important thing to remember is 2016 Transition rules:

Boys joining on or after Jan. 1, 2016, MUST use the new requirements.
Boys who are working on Tenderfoot through First Class MAY continue to work using the previous requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon attaining First Class.
Boys who have completed First Class MAY complete the rank they are currently working on using the previous requirements, but then MUST convert to the new requirements for subsequent ranks.
After 2016:
All Scouts MUST use the new requirements for all ranks.

For information on specific ranks, see link below:
http://usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/2016/bsranks.asp

Specifically new Scout rank requirements as of January 2016
http://usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/2016/changes/bsrank1-16.asp

For our upcoming Eagles, please read Eagle Rank Requirements as of January 2016
http://usscouts.org/advance/boyscout/2016/changes/bsrank7-16.asp

Important stuff everyone, please read!  Don't let a surprise requirement prevent you or your scout from advancing in rank.

Return to Bagley 6:00pm ish

You must inform Mr. Reynolds or Scoutmaster Mrs. Bushong ahead of time if you plan to attend because we must arrange enough transportation.

This is a great learning experience for the scouts and may give them insights into some of the challenges faced by our native pollinators, (bee's, butterflies, moths, etc.)

Service Opportunity

If you need some service time, here's a great opportunity to earn it plus help out the Cub Scouts. They are looking for boy scouts to assist, or even set up a mock campsite (with a tent and a mock campfire) just for fun so that the Cub Scouts could hang out with the older scouts. Saturday October 10, 2015 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at Perch Lake.  4331 E. Vail Lane, Gaylord.

Need to complete requirement 5 of the First Class Rank? Here's your opportunity!

If your scout needs to complete requirement 5 of the First Class Rank (and about 6-8 of our scouts do) then please take advantage of this opportunity.

Judge Mertz has agreed to meet with the scouts on Monday Oct 5th at 3:30 pm at the county courthouse.  He has court scheduled to run until 3:30 and will meet with the scouts after that.  The scouts are welcome to sit in the court room and quietly observe until the session is completed.  Mr. Reynolds will meet the scouts at the courthouse at approx. 3:15. Please wear your Class A uniform and be on your best behavior.  Plan to shake hands, introduce yourself and during the meeting ask the Judge a question.  It does not meet the requirement if your scout simply is an observer, he must be a part of the conversation. Notice the word "discuss" in the description.

The requirement is as follows: Visit and discuss with a selected individual approved by your leader (elected official, judge, attorney, civil servant, principal, teacher) your constitutional rights and obligations as a U.S. citizen.

Please make sure to thank Mr. Reynolds for this opportunity.

If you are unable to attend on this date, you may schedule your own meeting.  Please make sure it is someone you haven’t met before, so that you can learn and grow from this meeting.  Make sure your scoutmaster approves your choice before you meet.

The recommended process for earning merit badges in Troop 1

We have a lot of new scouts in our troop and we cannot cover everything in our initial troop meetings. Today I saw a similar post on Facebook posted by The Trails District.  I edited their comments and customized them to inform parents and scouts how the merit badge process works within our troop.

The recommended process for earning merit badges in Troop 1.

1. The Scout develops an interest in a merit badge and discusses his interest in the merit badge with his unit leader.

2. The Scoutmaster signs a blue card and provides the Scout with at least one counselor contact.

3. The Scout contacts the counselor.

4. The Scout and the counselor meet in a public place to discuss requirements, or bring a buddy or parent if you meet at a home. Depending on the merit badge, scout and counselor may meet several times to complete it. The scout should do the work.

5. The Scout finishes the requirements.

6. The counselor approves completion.

7. The Scout returns the signed blue card to his unit leader, who signs the applicant record section of the blue card.

8. The unit leader gives the Scout the applicant record.

9. The unit reports the merit badge to the council.

10. The Scout receives his merit badge, generally at a Court of Honor.

There are times that a scout may have to complete a merit badge with a different counselor due to many reasons.  That is acceptable.  There are other times that you may start a merit badge at summer camp or at merit badge tech day and then you finish it with a local counselor.  That is also acceptable.  Additionally, if there are only 1-2 requirements left to be signed off and there is no available counselor, the Scoutmaster has the discretion to sign off remaining requirements.

Service time opportunity... And a free lunch! This Saturday at Otsego County Park.

Spooky! Looking for scouts and a couple parents to volunteer at the Otsego County Park for their annual Halloween in the park. Sept 26th this Saturday they are asking for 1 adult assisting with the grilling of hot dogs and burgers and 4 scouts to assist with serving. They have all the supplies including gloves and utensils. They suggest it would be best to have two people assisting with serving either hot dogs or burgers to people, 1 to serve baked beans and 1 to serve chips.

There is no charge for you to come in or for the parents if you are dropping your scouts off. Please have them let the ranger know when they arrive. The lunch runs from 12:00-1:00pm. If possible can the scouts be here at 11:00 – 1:00.

You are welcome to have some lunch as well.   Please email the scoutmaster if you are planning to help. This is for service time for rank advancement.

Wednesday Sept 23 Recruit Night and Scout meeting

This Wednesday (Sept 23) 6:00 pm is recruit night for the Cub Scouts at Gaylord Intermediate School.  They asked if we could have a couple Boy Scout representatives there because occasionally they get older boys attending the sign up.  If you can attend the recruit night prior to our meeting, please comment below.  Plan to leave early to attend our meeting as usual at 7:00 pm, their recruit night goes until 8pm.

Additionally, one of the topics that we will discuss at our meeting will be the meal planning results from our recent camp out at Wilwin Lodge.  We'd like to discuss what worked well and what didn't about the menu plan, the shopping, the duty roster, the cooking and the clean up.  If you attended this camp out, please be prepared to discuss constructively.

Lastly do not forget your books!  Let's get everyone updated in advancement to prepare for our Court of Honor on October 18.

Ben's Eagle project tomorrow 11:30am.

Reminder! Ben's Eagle Project is tomorrow (Sunday Aug 30) at 11:30am if you are able to come and help. We will serve lunch also. We have brush to haul to the trailer, wood chips to spread, some digging and some short posts to carry. If you have a bucket (to carry wood chips) or a wheelbarrow that would be helpful. Bring work gloves. The site is the Otsego County Demonstration Gardens. Turn towards the High School then turn right near the Health Dept and follow Livingston Blvd shortly until you see the demonstration garden sign. You will see our vehicles. Thank you!

Last call for a Tigers Game Thursday!

Last Call!  Is anyone interested in going to to Comerica Park for a Tiger's game this week? If Troop 1 had 15+ people interested in going to a baseball game, there is a special called Weekday Value Pack. This package is an Upper Reserve ticket and a food voucher (hot dog, small pop, and chips) for under $20.00 per person!
There is an afternoon game on Thursday Aug 27th that starts at 1pm. it would be a long day, but could be a down and back (leave at 9am, get back at 8pm). If you and your scout are interested in participating in this, Leader Kevin Reynolds is organizing it. Please comment below if you want to go and we will quickly make arrangements! We need 15+ people for this package deal. Don't delay! Kevin needs to know ASAP if you want to go.  Right now he doesn't have enough for the package deal so if you want to go email me or call.

New Boy Scout Rank requirements effective Jan 2016.

Parents and Scouts, please read the new Boy Scout Rank requirements effective Jan 2016.  There are changes that may effect your scout depending on his current rank.

http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/programupdates.aspx

There is an article to download on this link.

The release of the new requirements in May 2015 is to allow unit leaders adequate time to plan their Scouts’ transition. Beginning work in the new requirements will be determined by the Scout’s joining date or current rank as of January 1, 2016:
For 2016:
• Boys joining on or after Jan. 1, 2016 MUST use the new requirements.
• Boys who have joined prior to Jan. 1, 2016:
• Who are working on the Scout badge MAY continue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon completion of the Scout badge.
• Who are working on Tenderfoot through First Class MAY continue to work on the existing requirements, but MUST convert to the new requirements upon attaining First Class.
• Who have completed First Class MAY complete the rank they are currently working on in the existing requirements, but then MUST convert to the new requirements for subsequent ranks.
For 2017: All Scouts MUST use the new requirements regardless of rank.
