October 11 – 13, 2013

Pigeon River Forest

Backpacking and Pioneering
        “Back to the Basics”
The 2013 Fall Camporee is being hosted by Troop 204 Indian River. This Camporee will consist of Scout units parking vehicles at a trail head and hiking approximately half a mile. Proper planning and preparation by Scouts will be critical to success for this event (physical fitness, gear, clothing, packing, understanding Leave No Trace principles, and learning pioneering skills). Preregistration will be required in September. The fee will be determined at that time. A detailed map will be provided on getting to the site located on the south end of Cornwall Flooding in the Pigeon River Forest.

The event will include the following:

Troops will pack in everything they will need for their campsite. This will include:
o   Tents and tarps (option of making rustic tarp shelters and not using tents)
o   Food (with small backpacking stoves or a plan to cook over the fire)
o   Dark screening material for campsite latrine, biodegradable toilet paper, and a shovel to toss in loose dirt (there will be no port-o-johns anywhere!)
o   Lots of lashing twine
o   All other essential items needed for a weekend backpacking adventure
Leave No Trace principles must be followed at all times
DNR Camp Registration Cards will be provided for each campsite
Units may work independently on the Pioneering, Backpacking, and Hiking merit badges
Pioneering Merit Badge
Backpacking merit badge
Hiking merit badge

Participants will receive a patch for the event
Competition: Troops will spend much of Saturday gathering “down and dead” forest timber and using this material to make campsite furniture and useful (or fun!) gadgets. No troops will be allowed to bring project materials other than twine to the event. There are many web sites with nifty pioneering gadgets and project ideas to make (including the seat for the latrine!). One excellent site is http://ajm.pioneeringprojects.org/pioneering/PioneeringProjects.pdf
Host troop will judge campsites for awards in different categories
