Tree Lot Signup

There were a large group of parents in attendance at the scout meeting tonight.  After much thought, it was decided to go ahead with the tree lot fundraiser.  This fundraiser has been the main source of financing the troop in the past.  The decision was made to order 150 trees (less than last year) and we hope to sell them within the first two weeks of Christmas tree sales.

Here is the signup sheet for parents and scouts to work the tree lot. Please sign up for 3 shifts.  If the trees do not sell in the first 2 weeks, the spreadsheet will be modified to include more time.

Hessel this weekend! Fun, Fun!

If your scout is going to Hessel this weekend, make sure to bring a completed permission slip.  It will save time if you have it filled out and ready to go.  Be prompt so scouts can leave on time and get to camp before dark.  It's no fun to set up the tents in the dark!

Sign up to sell popcorn!

We've signed up for 2 dates at Family Fare (Glens) to sell popcorn, Friday October 11 4-8pm and Saturday October 19 10-4pm.  Eric and his son are selling separately and they signed up for Family Farm and Home.  We can sign up for more dates if we need to because we have product left over, or if we have people to work and we want to sell more.

Show and Sell popcorn signup

Please email any questions to troop1.gaylord@gmail.com

Looking for advice on Show and Sell

Show and Sell:  In an effort to participate fully in the council popcorn program, I'm asking for parents and scouts to volunteer to work one of the Show and Sells at either Family Fare or Family Farm and Home. (I hope we only need 1 or 2 dates) I need to order popcorn by 10 pm TODAY online, and I am welcoming all comments on type of product to buy, how much to buy and the days that you would be available (or NOT available) to work in October.  Please comment ASAP for decision making purposes.

Popping corn is $10 and is in cases of 12
Caramel corn is $10 and is in cases of 12
Bacon Ranch popcorn is NEW is $15 and in case of 8
Pre-popped Kettle Corn is $15 and is case of 8
Dark and white chocolate corn $20 and is case of 8
Caramel corn with almonds pecans is $20 and is case of 8
Unbelievable butter or Butter lite is $20 and are in cases of 6
The prices increase from this point.

These cases come to $120 each.   What is your thought?

Last year Troop 1 had only 3 Boy Scouts who sold popcorn.  Let's try to increase those numbers a bit!  Thanks for your cooperation.  I know we are ALL so very busy.  Any advice you can offer, or commitment to support scouting by participating in council's program is appreciated.

I want to hear from you!  Please email troop1.gaylord@gmail.com with any comments today!

Popcorn Season is here!

Throughout the year Troop 1 has several fundraisers to choose from and Popcorn Sales are one of those opportunities.  We will have 3 ways for you to raise money for your scout account by selling popcorn.

Show and Sell: We will have a table at a store and 2 scouts and 2 parents should sit together to sell popcorn in shifts.  We will likely only do this for a day or 2 so it won't be a burden. We will not purchase a great deal of stock. Popcorn has to be ordered this Sunday (tomorrow), so any comments are encouraged ASAP.

Online: Sign up for the Online popcorn system and it will email your friends and family. (I found that products cost between $5-$7 more plus shipping, just to make you aware that it is really expensive.) If you choose to sell online here are instructions:
http://www.michiganscouting.org/pubs/Online_Selling_Information_Scouts.pdf
Then go to sell.trails-end.com

Selling popcorn individually begins September 28th.  I will have order forms ready for you to pick up at Wednesday's meeting. The more scouts that participate the better, even if you only sell a few boxes!  Here is an order form for you to print:  http://www.michiganscouting.org/pubs/MichiganLR_2_.pdf

One last thing. There is a prize program, but if we opt to forgo the prizes, our scouts can earn 33% instead of 30% in their account.  So for example, if they sold $300 in popcorn, with the prize program they would earn $90 for their account, plus win a small prize.  Without the prize program they would earn $99 in their account.  Please let me know your thoughts on this.  They would still earn a patch no matter what and would still be eligible for any national prizes if they were a top seller.

I want to hear from you!  Please email troop1.gaylord@gmail.com with any comments.

Great Opportunity - REALLY SHORT NOTICE! This Thursday and Friday!!

Trip is available to older Scouts in 9th grade on up that would like to go on a sail this week on Thursday and Friday please forward this email. They are looking for a few more to go on the trip.
(High School aged young men - $360, scholarships available)  August 15-16, Petoskey to Suttons Bay (Young Men in Science)

Inland Seas Education Association's Young Men in Science and Young Women in Science is a time when high-school ages students will become scientists and crew for two days onboard the schooner Inland Seas. They will conduct research projects related to the ecology of Lake Michigan. To accomplish their research objectives, students will learn to perform water chemistry analyses; determine the thermal structure of the lake; collect fish, plankton, and benthos; and analyze lake sediment. Students will also record weather observations several times a day for the National Weather Service. Students will enter their data on the shipboard computer for analysis, and prepare and present a short research report. Research results will be posted on ISEA’s website.

Students will also experience shipboard life and the demands of sailing a traditionally-rigged vessel. Students will learn boating safety, navigation and sailing theory. They will stand watch, help in the galley, and assist the crew with all phases of vessel operation including raising the anchor, hoisting sails, sail handling, and steering the boat. Team-building techniques will promote the students’ ability to work cooperatively with their peers.

Mark your Calendars for the Fall Camporee

PREFLYER–FALL CAMPOREE 2013
NORTHERN TRAILS DISTRICT
October 11 – 13, 2013

Pigeon River Forest

Backpacking and Pioneering
        “Back to the Basics”
The 2013 Fall Camporee is being hosted by Troop 204 Indian River. This Camporee will consist of Scout units parking vehicles at a trail head and hiking approximately half a mile. Proper planning and preparation by Scouts will be critical to success for this event (physical fitness, gear, clothing, packing, understanding Leave No Trace principles, and learning pioneering skills). Preregistration will be required in September. The fee will be determined at that time. A detailed map will be provided on getting to the site located on the south end of Cornwall Flooding in the Pigeon River Forest.

The event will include the following:

Troops will pack in everything they will need for their campsite. This will include:
o   Tents and tarps (option of making rustic tarp shelters and not using tents)
o   Food (with small backpacking stoves or a plan to cook over the fire)
o   Dark screening material for campsite latrine, biodegradable toilet paper, and a shovel to toss in loose dirt (there will be no port-o-johns anywhere!)
o   Lots of lashing twine
o   All other essential items needed for a weekend backpacking adventure
Leave No Trace principles must be followed at all times
DNR Camp Registration Cards will be provided for each campsite
Units may work independently on the Pioneering, Backpacking, and Hiking merit badges
Pioneering Merit Badge
Backpacking merit badge
Hiking merit badge

Participants will receive a patch for the event
Competition: Troops will spend much of Saturday gathering “down and dead” forest timber and using this material to make campsite furniture and useful (or fun!) gadgets. No troops will be allowed to bring project materials other than twine to the event. There are many web sites with nifty pioneering gadgets and project ideas to make (including the seat for the latrine!). One excellent site is http://ajm.pioneeringprojects.org/pioneering/PioneeringProjects.pdf
Host troop will judge campsites for awards in different categories
