Summit High Adventure Base Opportunity

Eligibility

To participate in the Summit's high-adventure program, each participant must:

Be a registered Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturer, or registered adult leader.
Be at least 13 years old by September 1 of the year of participation.
Have a current BSA Annual Health and Medical Record signed by a physician*, authorizing participation in high-adventure activities.
Meet the height/weight guidelines as indicated on the Annual Health and Medical Record.

Here are the details of the two crews that T31 have open for attendees:

Crew #1 is the River (cost is $595)

Rafting and Kayaking

Following your arrival at the Summit, you will spend a few days at the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base while our staff assesses your kayaking skills and prepares you to meet the challenges of the New River.

Then, you will head to the New River Gorge for three days of river paddling on one of the oldest rivers in the world. During your first two days in kayaks, you will encounter periods of quiet water interspersed with Class I to Class III rapids. You will spend each night at one of our river camps.

Then, you will conclude your river trip with a heart-pounding raft run on the Lower New that includes Class III to Class V rapids. Participants must be good swimmers as evidenced by passing the BSA's swimmer test.

Crew #2 is for Helmets and Harnesses (cost is $525) Climbing, Zip, and Ropes Courses These activities leverage the unique capabilities of the Summit with the natural splendor of the New River Gorge region. Participants will test their mettle on our six outstanding challenge courses. You will soar through the trees on the Summit canopy tours. Of course, you cannot come to a world-class climbing region without building your skills in that discipline and having an overnight climbing experience in the New River Gorge area (site depending on crew skill level). Participants should be comfortable with heights. All participants must weigh a minimum of 50 pounds and a maximum of 250 pounds or they can't participate, regardless of height.

We need a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 12 per crew and right now we are at

4 and 4.

There is a $100 down payment required for each attendee.  This payment is due in to Bechtel by May 31, 2013...so I would like to mail it at least a week early.

Summer Camp Registration! Cole Canoe Base

It's about that time!  Summer Camp is one of the best experiences that your boy scout can have. This year, Troop 1 is going to Cole Canoe base.  You may have signed your son up for camp on a signup sheet, but now Troop 1 needs some official documentation from you. We must have your son signed up by May 10 or else you will have to pay a late fee for late registration.  Camp is $285.  If Troop funds allow, there will likely be a stipend for camp, but plan on paying a large portion of that $285. If your son has money in their account from popcorn sales or other fundraisers, that money can be applied to camp.

If you do not have email, you may get a printed copy from Ken and hand it in at a meeting, but that may delay your registration if you wait for a meeting to turn it in. If Asst. Scoutmaster Julia Bushong has the information prior to May 10, she will register your scout online.  

Physical: Your scout must have a current physical for camp (remember camp dates are July 20-July 27) so physical must be current for that time. Print this medical form and take it to your doctor to be filled out.  Keep a copy for yourself!! This is a different form than last year, so you must print this form!

Camping Trip to Andreae Cabin this weekend!

This event is known as the Andreae Cabin trip involves a recreational event beginning at about 5:30 PM on Friday and going continuously until Sunday when the boys will return to Gaylord.  The boys will be cooking meals, participating in a hike and a service project which will include stacking fire wood for the cabin. Be prepared to carry your gear in to the cabin (a backpack or rucksack would be the best way to pack)

The fee noted is approximate and will include the camping fee, food and other costs incidental to the trip.

Risk assessment:  This event has been held without serious incident for more than 10 years.  Typical injuries in the past include minor ankle sprains and scrapes.  Any serious injury will be referred to the nearest hospital, either Petoskey or Cheboygan and you will be called.

The boys should arrive at Bagley Township Hall not later than 5:30 on Friday and will return to Bagley by 10:30AM Sunday.

           

          Cost per scout will be  approximately $10.00

       No air  rifles, pellet guns or paintball equipment is permitted.

Other rules and guidance can be reviewed in the Troop 1 Scout  Handbook.  Knives must be in conformance with the handbook and no fixed blade knives or hatchets are permitted.                .

          

ADULTS available during this activity include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Mr. Ken Arndt, and Mr. Dave Detgen.  Adults are registered in the troop and have been trained in both scouting operations, water safety and first aid.  In addition, Mrs. Bushong will be driving up and Mr. Zelkowski will be driving back from Indian River.

If you think your child will need such medications as Tylenol or other prescribed meds, please list this under the current medications section of the medical form and send it with your son and give it to the adults at check in.  Boys may not retain any medications while in the Sportsplex and will be administered the meds by adults.  NO MEDICATIONS WILL BE DISPENSED to a scout THAT is not specifically identified with that scout.

Parents and Scout:  The first page must be filled out completely and returned to the trip adult at or before departure.  If Part A and Part C are in troop files, no further action is necessary.  If parts A and C are not on hand, one will need to be completed before the drop off is complete.

 

Suggested Equipment

Where is this anyway?  This is the Agnes Andreae preserve located about 5 miles east of Indian River on the Pigeon River.  This 200 acre preserve has the primitive cabin which we use and about 10 miles of hiking trails along the river.  The cabin has electricity but we must pack in our water and other special cooking gear like dutch ovens and food of course.  On Saturday we are going to hike in the morning and stack wood in the wood shed for the preserve, after a contractor drops two large trees on the site close to the cabin (we are not cutting down trees).

Parents if you want to visit: 

Directions:  I75 to Indian River Main exit, go left, turn right at Burger King and follow Club Drive about 1 mile past BK to Onaway Road—Go right on Onaway Road and drive about 6 miles to  Riverwood Trail and go left—Drive to the “T” and the entrance to the preserve is across the intersection (cross street is Sky Trail).

To get to the cabin, follow the signs and walk down the hill to the east (marked) to the cabin site.

We will be hiking in from the parking lot to the site.  Good boots or shoes and boots are necessary.  No tennis shoes without boots.

It may rain so bring rain gear—at least a rain jacket or poncho.

If you have a rucksack or pack, pack your gear in it and the hike in, plus the hike on Saturday can be applied to advancement.

Weather is changeable this time of year.  What is the worst thing that can happen on this event, short of  WWIII?  Cold rain mixed with snow, soooo. . .

Rain gear and a jacket or jacket and sweat shirt with rain gear is essential for layering.

Snow pants or rain pants

A cap—preferably with a bill (in front guys) to keep rain off of your heads and faces.

Changes of socks and underwear and a change of pants and shirt if you get wet.

And the usual:

Toothbrush and tooth paste

Sleeping Bag

Sleeping pad (for the wood bunks)

Sleep wear—and shoes or slippers

Camera

Fishing pole (out of season but we can try catch and release)

Any meds you need for the weekend

And-

Cotton or Canvas Work Gloves

Special first aid gear as required by you

Hand Warmers

Cards, games etc.

Meet at city building located at:

City of Gaylord, 305 E Main St.

Please bring wire brushes for scraping and weed trimmers if you have them.

 Paint, paint brushes and gloves will be provided.

Lunch and drinks will also be provided.

You are responsible for your own child; however, Scouts can be dropped off to help.  Steven will be dividing the helpers up into 4 groups. Some people will have to drive to a hydrant, others will be walking.

We will meet back at the city building for lunch at noon, lunch will be provided by Bob Evans and 7up.

Updated Events!

Below are some updates for your boy scout schedule:

There is no scout meeting tomorrow (April 3) due to Spring Break.

Zack's Eagle project will be postponed for this weekend, April 6 & 7th and will instead be next weekend, April 13 & 14th.

Don't forget to attend our committee meeting on Sunday, April 7th.  6:00 p.m. for the scouts with leadership positions, that means our new patrol leaders, and boys interested in Senior Patrol leader and Assistant Senior Patrol leaders position.  Come check out what the duties are for those roles. The committee meeting for all parents and committee members will begin at 7:00 p.m. held at Bagley Township hall.

Court of Honor will be held on April 10th at 7:00 p.m. at Bagley Township Hall. Bring desserts or snacks to share.  Come and support your boyscout and see the merit badges be awarded and see the boys assume their positions of responsibility.
