THE HEADLANDS - Drivers needed

Troop 1's outing to The Headlands in Emmet County will be this weekend (Jan. 18th - 20th).

We have at least 24 scouts and 5 adults attending this outing. We have the following drivers but still need at least one and possibly two more drives to get all the scouts to and from the outing:
Mr. Wagar, Mrs. Salem, Mr. Adams, Mr. House, Mr. Oltersdorf, & Mr. Neff.

Please contact Mrs. Savory or Mr. Neff if you can drive to / from or both.

The Headlands Park of Emmet County is located on the Straits of Mackinac, 3.8 miles west of downtown Mackinaw City.

I-75 Northbound: Take exit 338 and go North on Nicolet Ave. (M108) to Central Ave. Turn left and follow Central Ave. West to Wilderness Park Drive (C81) and turn left. Go ½ mile south to the main entrance on the right (West) side of the road.

Snowed Under

All lined up in a row, two groups of Massachusetts Scouts were beginning their trek across Vermont’s Green Mountains. These scouts were snowshoeing and every one of them fell at least once. A few rules of snowshoeing are to always keep your tip up (front end of snowshoe), never back up, hike in a single line behind the leader, and keep your feet wide apart to keep from stepping on your other snowshoe. They traced the origin of snowshoeing back 6,000 years to Asia. There are two types of snowshoes, one is called the wooden bear paw (Indian snowshoe), which is oval shaped with a curved heel, and has laces like a sneaker. The other is called the military style snowshoe, which is shaped like a teardrop with a short tail at the end, and uses metal buckets as bindings. These scouts loved the adventure.

FINAL TREE LOT UPDATE

Saturday December 22nd has been added to the tree lot schedule. We will be open for business one last day before closing the Christmas tree lot for another year.

Please contact Tim Neff if you can help at the lot on Saturday. The most important hours will be noon to six. If you can not reach Tim, you are always welcome to stop by and help out at the tree lot!

TREE LOT UPDATE - HELP NEEDED

Happy Holidays Troop 1 Scout Families!

Our Christmas Tree lot is off to a good start and we are heading into what is traditionally our busiest sales weekend.

We have at least two families signed up for all time slots on Saturday December 8th - THANK YOU.

We have one family signed up for each time slot on Sunday December 9th - THANK YOU. If this year is like past years, we could use other families to help on Sunday. Please let Mr. Neff know if you can help on Sunday.

Our next BIG need for help are Friday December 14th (no family signed up), Saturday December 15th (one shift filled, FOUR shifts open) and Sunday December 16th (one shift filled, FOUR shifts open). Please let Mr. Neff know if you can help on any of these dates.

Community Center Lock-in

Scouts should NOT arrive before 8:00 PM and all must be picked up by 8:00 AM. This lock-in will last 13 hours due to the time change. All youth must have a permission slip. If you are unable to print one, Mrs. Savory will have some available at the Lock-in

It has been decided that youth may invite guests to the community center lock-in. They must be scouts or planning on joining the troop therefore they must be between the 6th to 12th grades and not over the age of 18. They must have a troop 1 permission slip filled out by their parents. Guests will be paid for by the youth inviting them. Please remember to inform your guests that they must follow the rules of the troop (Scout Oath and Law). No youth will be allowed to drive home from the event so if your guest is old enough to drive be sure there is another form of transportation for them on Sunday morning. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Weeknight shifts are for two hours between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Work and family schedules allow for a 3 hour time slot but each family works the two hours that fits their schedule. If you need to start earlier on a week day, we are flexible at the Tree Lot.

Weekend shifts are two hour blocks and are going fast. The ten to noon and noon to two slots have been very popular with the early sign ups.

Cool Wheels
I was reading this article and I saw a lot of cool cars like the Lamborghini Murcielago – LP640. It has a 6.5 liter V12 engine (640 horsepower), it roars at a top speed of 210mph, and hits 62 in 3.4 seconds. This car sells for about $350,000.

Also saw the Jaguar C-XF, it has a six speed 4.2 liter V8 (420 horsepower) engine, this is a concept car for techno innovation. It has dual view screen for driver (GPS) and passenger DVD’s plus much more. This car sells for most likely a pretty penny if it makes it to the showroom floor.

The Dodge Viper SRT10 also appears in this article. It sports a 8.4 liter V10, gets 560 pound feet of torque, and goes 0 – 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. The car costs $83,145 base price.

The Chevrolet Volt is an electric car that you can plug into your house and is good for 40 miles on a full charge. Runs on GM’s E-Flex Propulsion System, which can charge the battery from a 1.0 liter 3 cylinder turbo engine/ethanol gasoline blend.

The BMW Hydrogen 7 is the first hydrogen powered everyday luxury performance vehicle. The engine, a spin off from the 7 series 12 cylinder, runs on gasoline or liquid hydrogen (not fuel cell). Engine power is 260 horses and torque stays the same as you switch fuels with the push of a button. Why it’s cool: green is good. Only selected VIP drivers can purchase.
