IMPORTANT SUMMER CAMP ANNOUNCEMENT

We are leaving Glens on Sunday the 8th at 11:00 for Boy Scout camp.

We will arrive back at Glens on Saturday the 14th at 11:30/12:00.

Wednesday is parents / family day. Flag raising is at 5:45 and dinner is at 6:00. The number to call for dinner reservations is 231-946-4263 . It is first come first serve and they ask that you call by Tuesday . If any one is going to spend the night please let Mrs. savory know.

Mowing at Hayes Tower

Mr. Oakley would like to remind everyone that there is a mowing opportunity at Hayes Tower Township today - Monday July 2nd. Mowers may report for duty at 5:30.

Congratulations New Eagle Scout in Troop 1

Nick C. – Troop 1 – Gaylord – June 4, 2007

Nick’s Eagle Project was done at the Leonard Jensen Memorial Trail, south of Gaylord in Otsego Lake Township. He did a trash sweep of the trail, built and put up new directional signs for the trail, built and added benches, moved the trail opening sign and mapped it with a GPS.

Hayes Tower Mowing Date

Hayes Tower mowing will be Monday, June 18th. Please let me know if you CAN or CAN NOT mow on these dates.

Community Service Opportunity

Troop 1 has been contacted to see if any Scouts are interested in earning two hours of community service on Saturday June 23rd from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

The community service will be helping with clean-up at the Gaylord Air Fair.

Mr. Neff will be co-ordinating this effort.

A Second 10 Mile Hike

Kevin has planned a 10 mile hike for Saturday June 16. The hike will start at Kevin's house at 1:00pm and hikers may be picked up at Kevin's house at 5:30pm. Directions to Kevin's house and a gear list for the hike will be emailed to all Scout families.

This hike qualifies as one of the hikes for requirement 5 of the Hiking Merit Badge. The hike would also qualify for 2nd class and 1st class rank advancement requirements.

Adult leaders and other interested adults are welcome to join this Hike.

Please call Mr. Neff (732-4051) to confirm you will be going on the hike - he needs to know how many treats to have ready for hike participants.

Hiking Merit Badge Update

REMINDER TO ALL INTERESTED SCOUTS!

A 10 mile hike is planned for Friday June 8. This hike has been planned by Nate.

Scouts will meet at Nate's house by 5:15 and the hike will start at 5:30pm and end at the Otsego Lake State Park. Scouts may be picked up at the Otsego Lake State Park at 9:00pm.

Nate has sent an email to the Troop 1 list with directions to his home and a packing list for the hike.

Scouts wanting to participate in this hike should call Mr. Parker at 989-448-0268 or call Mr. Neff at 989-732-4051. We need to know the number of scouts planning to participate so we can plan for the number of adults going on the hike.

Memorial Day Parade

Members of Troop 1 participated in the Gaylord Memorial Day Parade and wreath ceremony.

A Ten Mile Hike

Nate P. has planned a 10 mile hike for Friday June 8.

The hike will start and end at the Otsego County Park located on West Otsego Lake drive on the shores of beautiful Lake Otsego. Hikers should be ready to start the trek at 5:30.

This hike qualifies as one of the hikes for requirement 5 of the Hiking Merit Badge. The hike would also qualify for 2nd class and 1st class rank advancement requirements.

ALL SCOUTS going on this hike must complete Hiking Merit Badge Requirements 1 through 4 prior to the hike. See requirements listed in a prior post.

Scouts interested in the Hiking Merit Badge should see the Scoutmaster for a Blue Card!

I have a story that I would like to share.

The Person of the Week April 6, 2007 on ABC News was James Calderwood. He is a Boy Scout that became an Eagle Scout and earned all 122 merit badges. Hiking Merit Badge

Scouts interested in earning the Hiking Merit Badge should read the requirements below and print a copy of the Hiking Merit Badge work sheets available at: http://www.meritbadge.com/files/mb-docs/Hiking.doc

Hiking Merit Badge Requirements:

1. Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while hiking, including hypothermia, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, frostbite, dehydration, sunburn, sprained ankle, insect stings, tick bites, snakebite, blisters, hyperventilation, and altitude sickness.

2. Explain and, where possible, show the points of good hiking practices. including the principles of Leave No Trace, hiking safety in the daytime and at night, courtesy to others, choice of footwear, and proper care of feet and footwear.

3. Explain how hiking is an aerobic activity. Develop a plan for conditioning yourself for 10-mile hikes, and describe how you will increase your fitness for longer hikes.

4. Make a written plan for a 10-mile hike, including map routes, a clothing and equipment list, and a list of items for a trail lunch.

5. Take five hikes, each on a different day, and each of at least ten continuous miles. Prepare a hike plan for each hike.*

6. Take a hike of 20 continuous miles in one day following a hike plan you have prepared.*

7. After each of the hikes (or during each hike if on a continuous trek) in requirements 5 and 6, write a short report of your experience. Give dates and descriptions of routes covered, the weather, and interesting things you saw. Share this report with your merit badge counselor.

Any one of these, Hiking Merit Badge, Cycling Merit Badge or Swimming Merit Badge, are Eagle Scout Requirements. Scouts who have already earned the Cycling or Swimming Merit Badge may earn the Hiking Merit Badge and it will count as one of your optional merit badge requirements.
