I have a story that I would like to share.
The Person of the Week April 6, 2007 on ABC News was James Calderwood. He is a Boy Scout that became an Eagle Scout and earned all 122 merit badges. Hiking Merit Badge Requirements:
1. Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while hiking, including hypothermia, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, frostbite, dehydration, sunburn, sprained ankle, insect stings, tick bites, snakebite, blisters, hyperventilation, and altitude sickness.
2. Explain and, where possible, show the points of good hiking practices. including the principles of Leave No Trace, hiking safety in the daytime and at night, courtesy to others, choice of footwear, and proper care of feet and footwear.
3. Explain how hiking is an aerobic activity. Develop a plan for conditioning yourself for 10-mile hikes, and describe how you will increase your fitness for longer hikes.
4. Make a written plan for a 10-mile hike, including map routes, a clothing and equipment list, and a list of items for a trail lunch.
5. Take five hikes, each on a different day, and each of at least ten continuous miles. Prepare a hike plan for each hike.*
6. Take a hike of 20 continuous miles in one day following a hike plan you have prepared.*
7. After each of the hikes (or during each hike if on a continuous trek) in requirements 5 and 6, write a short report of your experience. Give dates and descriptions of routes covered, the weather, and interesting things you saw. Share this report with your merit badge counselor.
Any one of these, Hiking Merit Badge, Cycling Merit Badge or Swimming Merit Badge, are Eagle Scout Requirements. Scouts who have already earned the Cycling or Swimming Merit Badge may earn the Hiking Merit Badge and it will count as one of your optional merit badge requirements.
The clean up date for St. Mary Cemetery will be Thursday May 10th at 5:30pm. Rain date for the clean up will be Friday at 5:30pm.
Please bring rakes and gloves. Tarps and/or a wheelbarrow could also be used. Mr. Neff will bring a chain saw and bow saw.
Clean up involves raking up pine cones and pine needles, picking up sticks, cutting up several large branches that are down, and removing deteriorating plastic flowers.
With enough help, clean up will take just a couple of hours. Please call (732-4051) or email Mr. Neff to let him know if you will be at the clean up. Calling everyone on the St. Mary's list will take time so your calls or emails would be appreciated.
Scouts will be reminded of the clean up date at the Wednesday meeting. There are currently 18 scout families signed up for St. Mary's and the sign up sheet will be at Wednesday's meeting.
Tuesday May 15th is the first planned mowing date for St. Mary's. Thursday May 17th is the rain date.
Charlie Bono, former Assistant Scoutmaster and father of current Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Adam Bono is on a bike adventure with a cause.
Charlie is riding his bike from Marco Island, Florida to Gaylord, Michigan to raise money for the Kyle Casey Memorial Scholarship. Kyle is a Troop 1 Eagle Scout who was lost in a car accident in 2003.

It’s that time of year again; SPRING. The major fundraiser for the Scouts is grass cutting. The troop is contracted to cut three area cemeteries; St. Mary’s in Gaylord, Resurrection in Vanderbilt, and Hayes Tower Cemetery and Township Hall on the west side of Gaylord. We have done this for a great number of years with a huge amount of success. We cut from mid May through mid September.
Mowing is an easy way for both the Scout and the parent to put money into the Scout's account. St. Mary's and Resurrection cemeteries are usually cut every other week and Hayes Tower is done as needed. The Scouts can make up to, and generally do make $10.00 an hour. If you are working along side your Scout cutting, then your hours are also added into his, making it possible to make up to $20.00 an hour. If you are operating a riding lawnmower the Scout’s account will be credited up to $20.00 an hour. Parents are encouraged to come out and cut even without their Scout with the money being credited to the Scout’s account.
We do have some rules that we enforce. First and foremost, you must be there with your Scout. If you are unable to be there then you may make arrangements with another family to have your Scout accompany them. That is allowed with the understanding that they are responsible for him. Safety glasses must be worn when weed whacking at all times. Sunglasses and / or prescription glasses that are not impact resistant are not safety glasses. Only licensed drivers are allowed to use riding lawnmowers. When we cut, we use riding lawnmowers, push lawnmowers, and weed whackers. The weed whackers and push mowers are to go around the gravestones, trees, signs, etc. and the riders will go up and down the rows. If you have a push mower and all the trim work is done, then please feel free to go up and down the rows at that time. We have instituted this pattern to allow us to earn up to $10.00 an hour. Gas and oil for your lawn equipment is your responsibility.
We have sign up sheets and contact people for each of the cemeteries. You may sign up to cut as many of the cemeteries as you like. The contact people will announce at the scout meetings when we will be cutting, so make sure that your Scout pays attention to announcements. Once we no longer meet on a regular basis, then the contact people will call to let you know when we will be cutting. We generally begin cutting around 5 PM, however we do understand that people work different hours and may not be able to cut in the evening. If this is the case, you are more than welcome to go out early and cut, however, we ask that you let the contact person know, and that you only cut 2 hours to allow everyone a chance to earn some money.
If the cemetery doesn't get finished the first night and you are able to return the next day or night to cut, then you can cut as long as you like to insure that it is finished. Once you have finished cutting, be sure to call the contact person to turn in your hours. The sooner this is done the faster we can get payment into the Scout’s accounts. If it happens to be raining enough that we can't cut, we will cut the following day. When this is the case, if you need to go out early to cut, then you may cut as long as you like. We find that people arrange their schedules to cut on the appointed night, so when we have delays due to the weather there are not as many people available to cut.
St. Mary's and Resurrection are paid when done. Hayes Tower is paid out at the end of the season; however, we do keep a running tally of the approximate amounts going into accounts. This allows you to draw from your sons account for trips, camping gear, etc.

Scouts and adult leaders needing to renew their First Aid training will meet on Wednesday April 25 at 6:00 pm at the DEQ building located at 2100 West M-32. The training needs to start at 6:00 so please try to arrive a few minutes early. Everyone attending should park in back of the building.
The DEQ address is 2100 West M-32 and is next to the furniture store just west of the former Carter Lumber store and the DNR on the north side of M-32. There is a service drive shared with the furniture store on the east end and a flooring store on the west end.

Hi, I am Anthony L. the new webmaster.
If anyone has any ideas for me please let me know. For this weeks meeting at 6:00 there is a shake down for anyone doing the overnight hike at Spring Camporee. The new scouts will be at the 7:00 meeting. If you were asked to bring a camping item to the meeting please don't forget to bring it.
