Christmas Party at tomorrow's meeting!

Don't forget the scout meeting tomorrow is the Christmas party!  Bring a treat and/or game and let's have some fun before we go on our Christmas vacation!  See you tomorrow, 7:00 pm at Bagley Township hall.

Need a volunteer for Tree lot Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat!

Hi everyone!  We still have trees to sell! We need a volunteer for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in hopes to sell some more trees. Every tree we sell is profit for the troop.

FYI, the flags were left outside at the tree lot tonight (Tuesday) so I put them in my van. Kmart was already closed for the night, so I couldn't get the trailer key.  I will drop the flags off tomorrow to whomever is working!

If you haven't signed up to work, please do!  if you've already put in all your shifts, please consider one more.

Thanks!

Sunday, December 16, 2012

Parents!  We need a few shifts covered at the tree lot today.  The shifts that are open are 2:00-4:00pm and 4:00-6:00pm.  We still have 88 trees left to sell.  This is the fundraiser that supports our troop, so it is important to make a profit from the tree sales.  If you can work at the tree lot today, please do!  We appreciate all the folks who have helped work the tree lot this year.

In addition, if there are still trees left after today we need people to sign up for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.  And if there are still trees by Saturday, Dec 21, then we need people to work on Saturday as well.

Thank you for your support!

Volunteer Time for the Holidays!

Scouts remember to work on Saturday December 15 for Toys For Tots and the Kiwanis!  Hours to work are 10:00 am - 4:00 pm at the building in between the Middle School and South Maple Elementary.  (It used to be called the Stars building)  All scouts need volunteer time, and we should support the Kiwanis club because they support us.  Look for Assistant Scoutmaster Eric Clink when you arrive!

Don't forget that next weeks meeting is the Scout Christmas party!  The scouts planned the party, so you'll have to ask your scout what they decided to do.  But I'm sure treats would be appreciated!

Lastly, our merit badge counseling sessions are in full swing. Work on your merit badges over the Christmas break so that you will be progressing by the time we resume scout meeting on January 9th!

Camporee Planning today 9:00 AM for Parents!

Troop 1 Parents!  Next weekend we have a very important event, our Fall Camporee!   We have about 100 scouts and leaders planning to attend the events, with registrations still coming in.  Please attend today's hands-on planning session!  We are meeting at the event site at 9:00 am -? TODAY. The event is being held behind the middle school near the pioneer (?)  building.

We will be discussing plans, maybe walking the area where the orienteering course will be held.  The course will be held in Aspen park, so bring your walking shoes. We will be brainstorming and perhaps assigning jobs.  We need to know how many parents we can count on to help us put together the best camporee.  If you can't come today but plan on helping at the camporee, let me know.  If you plan on camping with Troop 1 let me know.  jbushonghome@charter.net 989-619-2526  If you can donate time to help assemble the course , please let me know.  Thanks!

Weekend Update

Check out the slideshow of pictures on the blog of the Troop 1 scouts at the International Jamboree in Hessel, MI.  A fun time was had by all!

The meeting tonight regarding the Fall Camporee went well.  Thanks to all who participated!  Plans are well underway.  We will still need parent help at the camporee Oct 5-7 as well as help for the camporee preparation Saturday Sept 29 at 9:00 am at the behind the middle school.  We plan to continue our discussion of the camporee Wednesday during the scout meeting.  If you are a parent who normally drops off your scout, consider staying for the meeting to learn how you can help with the camporee.  We need ideas, some donations, and talented folks the day of the camporee to help scouts.

Thanks!

Scoutmaster Comments... Welcome Back!

Welcome Back Troop 1 to the 2012-13 Scouting Year

September 2012

This is a brief for scouts and parents of all of the early season activities this year. We hope you are all planning to come back—we miss ya. New meeting plans are in the works this year—more merit badges!

First of all, Hessel this year is September 14-16 (this weekend!), so in order to get started with the planning, we will have our first meetings on the 5th and 12th of September 7:00PM at Bagley as usual. The agenda for this meeting include planning for Hessel and planning longer term for the Fall Camporee on the weekend of October 5th. Click the link for the Hessel information: Hessel Information  Contact Ken Arndt immediately if your scout plans to attend.  We leave from Bagley at 5:30 on Friday, Sept 14.

Congrats to our latest Eagle Scouts this year: Kory Wegmeyer and Kenny Arndt—both firmly entrenched in Michigan Tech now. Kenny Arndt takes the record from Doug Tyran and Chris Coale turning his packet in closest to the time he was actually born. Trevor Adams and Zack Zelkowski are right behind them.

Summer camp was certainly a success. Our boys earned more merit badges per scout than any camp for the past 3 years. Bravo! Not only that but 4 boys attended high adventure camp and 4 more earned the horsemanship badge at Greilick. Our senior patrol leader Steven Verduce attended camp at Philmont and came back skinnier than he was when he left. His belt wouldn’t make a good shoe tongue. What a trip.
The Pack 1 kickoff event is going to be on the 20th of September (Thursday) at the Intermediate School rec room at 6:30 PM. We have one den chief serving the pack now—anyone else want to volunteer?

September 22 is another opportunity for service. The scouts have been invited to cook and serve short order food to the Veterans around northern Michigan who will be coming to Gaylord. This is like Critters in the Moonlight but a little bigger. We should be involved from 10:00AM to 1:00PM only—and then we are done. More service time if the scouts need it.

Grass cutting will continue into late September. There is still a chance to make some $$ so contact the grass chairmen.

The Fall Camporee this year is October 5th to 7th. It is different because the Camporee is our responsibility this year. The theme is “Find Your Way in Scouting.” The event will involve earning the orienteering merit badge. We are going to conduct it in the lands of Aspen Park in Gaylord and the adjacent Gaylord school property, totaling about 140 acres. Adults will have a meeting on the 16th (Sunday) at 6:30 PM (after Hessel) to assign responsibilities and go over the concept. We need everybody’s help—especially adults--to make this work, so please come.

The fall Court of Honor to reward all of the efforts at summer camp and over the summer will be Sunday the 21st of October at Bagley. Plan to attend and bring relatives and friends. One thing we changed last year was to allow a scout to plan the meeting. Ben Bushong did a bang up job and this year’s meeting will be planned and conducted by Zack Zelkowski. We install new troop leadership in October--new patrol leaders and staff. It will be a busy couple of months.

Before you know it we will be headed to the fall lock in the Community Center in November.

Jeff reported to the committee that he is ready to make contact with the wreath suppliers, so get ready. And POPCORN is next on the agenda—yes we are ready to start as soon as the forms come in. Take orders now verbally and when we get the forms, you will be all set. 30% profit there to the scout.
It has come to my attention that Camp Greilick will be closed to Boy Scouting except for weekends soon. That means we will have other choices to make for camp. I am sure once the committee sets to work on options, we will be able to plan for a good experience once again next year. Not to worry.
Remind your buddies to come on back before you have all the fun—as yet another year begins.

From the Scenic Trail-

Dime toss at Otsego County fair!  Good News!  The scouts are again asked to work a the dime toss at the Otsego County Fair.  However, the twist is that the profits earned on the days that the scouts worked, WILL GO IN YOUR SCOUT ACCOUNT! Each scout must bring a parent, and the hours worked by both scout and parent will count towards your share for your scout account.  Eric expects that it will be busiest from 6pm-10 pm so he'd like 3 parents and 3 scouts during that time.  The other times can be 2 parents and 2 scouts.  Please check out the link and sign up! Otsego County Fair Dime Toss sign up sheet  They also need some folks to help take the tent down on Saturday.  Please call Eric if you can assist with that. 231-675-2220.

Back to school and back to regular scout meetings!  The first meeting will be September 5th, Bagley Township hall, at 7:00 p.m.  Recruit a new friend from school! Let's make this the best year ever in scouting. We will regroup and begin planning for the Hessel campout.

This annual scout rally is one of the favorites!  Don't miss the International Scout Rally  in Hessel Michigan on September 14-16.  This years theme is "Out of This World".  Troop 1 will plan a game based on that theme.  There will be games, and costumes, and a dance!  Yes, the girl scouts will be there! See this flyer for information.  International Scout Rally

Mark your calendar for the Fall Camporee!  Troop 1 is hosting the Fall Camporee on October 5, 6, and 7th.  You will have the opportunity to earn the Orienteering merit badge!  Scouts plan to attend, and parents, please plan to help!  We are hosting this in the field behind the Middle school.  More details to follow.

Court of Honor is scheduled to be held on Sunday, October 21st.  More details to follow.  But most importantly, scouts you still have time to earn merit badges prior to that date. Use this last month of summer to complete outstanding merit badges.
