Coast Guard Open House

Below is a great event for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts! The Coast Guard is having an open house on Sunday, October 4th. Many booths, activities, and refreshments.

The Coast Guard does a lot for Scouting, (they just helped with a new roof on the Trading Post at Camp) and it would be great to see a bunch of Scouts in uniform at this event!

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – We are honored to invite the public and media to an Open House and Coast Guard Appreciation Day at Air Station Traverse City on Sunday, October 4, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rain or shine (or snow!), meet the real-life ‘Guardians’ of the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is a truly unique opportunity to get a in-depth look at multi-mission Coast Guard assets and capabilities, tour the facility, learn about the different rescue equipment and learn first-hand why they are known as the “Great Lakes Guardians.” There will be several information booths describing the varied missions and responsibilities of the Coast Guard to include environmental response and measures to address aquatic nuisance species, rescue swimmers, Coast Guard recruiters and others. There will also be an informative ‘State of the Co! ast Guard’ presentation by the unit’s Commanding Officer, Commander Jon Spaner, as well as a Search and Rescue demonstration by the Air Station’s HH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew at 3:00 p.m.

Troop 1 Gaylord - Hessel Weekend Notes

We will post this Wednesday and hand it out at the troop meeting tonight at 7:00 at Bagley Township Hall for those of you going to Hessel with us this weekend. Don’t stay away tonight if you did not make the meeting last week—we want to see you-come on to the meeting.

We will depart from the Glen’s parking lot at 5:30PM on Friday. So far, the following adults are driving: Arndt, Wagar, Adams and Zelkowski. More adults are welcome as the scout spirit moves you—just let us know so we have enough adult food.

Remember that this weekend has the theme: Superheroes. So your costume should be in the planning stages. The SPL will finalize the game we will prepare tonight, so if you are going, be sure to be there at 7:00PM. This campout is a hoot—if you can make it at all, please come. If there is a problem, call me. On Saturday we test scouts at our site with the game we develop, and our scouts travel around to the other sites to go through the games provided by each unit. Yup, competition.

This campout also features a band on Saturday night—and also girls from the surrounding Canadian and American Scout Units. The Canadian girls in scouting are trained to dance by law and can also kill wild animals with their bare hands—so we should be busy and safe. Their scoutmasters may not have these skills.

We expect to head back from Hessel by 11:00AM Sunday and be in Gaylord by 12:30 PM

Things you should bring in addition to your sleeping bag and sleeping mat are:

Flashlight and or headlamp
Two changes of socks and at least one change of underwear
Change of pants, sweatshirt
Class A scout uniform shirt for the Flag ceremonies
Rain Jacket and Pants
Cap
Fall or winter jacket and sweatshirt
Toiletries
An extra pair of closed toed shoes (flip flops, sandals etc are not allowed)
Scout knife (folding knives only-swiss army knife or similar)
Scout Meds for the duration in a plastic bag with instructions
Note: Tonight I will check to be sure we have a current Part A and C on file for each scout—If I don’t I will ask you to complete one at departure. I believe that all scouts who went anywhere have a current set of forms.

There has been some discussion about the up front money for campouts—in this case $45 per scout, when the scout’s account is negative. If your account has a positive balance or has a zero balance, this does not apply to you. I will collect the checks tonight and at the latest Friday at departure if the promise to deliver the check Friday is made by a parent. If no check comes on Friday, and the scout comes to Glen’s, we may restrict further camping and lock in activities until the account is paid off. I am sorry we have to resort to this but our scouts hopefully will begin to take a bit more seriously the fund raising opportunities we offer to our scouts—grass cutting, popcorn sales, wreath sales coming up soon and we can see the scouts earning their way.

The interior of our scout trailer is now complete thanks to Mr. Cromell and it will be at the meeting tonight. We all owe Mr. Cromell a thank you for all of his work.

Final Mow of the Year at St. Mary's

Hello Scout Families,

Here's your last chance to earn $$$ for your scout accounts with mowing at St. Mary's. The cemetary needs mowed and cleaned up. That means flower arrangements get thrown away and the place looks good.

If you can mow any time this week or clean up, please let me know when and where you plan to mow. I can mow on Thursday, but if we can get it done before then, it is more than fine with me. :)

Friends of NRA Banquet Help Request

We are still short 3 scouts for tomorrow night the 12th for the Friends of NRA banquet from 5:00 to about 9:00. I realize that OA fellowship is underway, and last weekend of summer for families is an issue, but if you can help, please do so. Eagles hall on Saturday night—5:00PM til about 9:00. We will be delivering bucket gifts and running tickets for the auction. You get dinner too.

We are going to split any gift we get 50% to the scout accounts that help and 50% to the troop. Last year we received about $450.00. I cannot be sure what we will get this year, but you are bound to benefit in these two ways and get service time.

Troop Positions of Responsibility

Elections are approaching. Please review the Positions of Responsibility and consider running for a post.

Patrol Leader's Council

Senior Patrol Leader

The senior patrol leader (SPL) is elected by the Scouts to represent them as the top youth leader in the troop. He runs all troop meetings, events, activities, the annual program planning conference, and the patrol leaders' council meeting. He appoints other troop youth leaders with the advice and counsel of the Scoutmaster.

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader

The assistant senior patrol leader (ASPL) is the second highest-ranking youth leader in the troop. He is appointed by the senior patrol leader with the approval of the Scoutmaster. The assistant senior patrol leader acts as the senior patrol leader in the absence of the senior patrol leader or when called upon. He also provides leadership to other youth leaders in the troop.

Patrol Leader

The patrol leader is the elected leader of his patrol. He represents his patrol on the patrol leaders' council and appoints the assistant patrol leader.

Troop Guide

The troop guide works with new Scouts. He helps them feel comfortable and earn their First Class in their first year. He teaches basic Scout skills and works with the patrol leader at patrol leaders' council meetings.

Other troop leadership positions

Assistant Patrol Leader

The assistant patrol leader is appointed by the patrol leader and leads the patrol in his absence. He represents his patrol at patrol leaders' council meetings when the patrol leader cannot attend. The assistant patrol leader position does not count towards leadership requirements for Star, Life, or Eagle.

Quartermaster

The quartermaster keeps track of troop equipment and sees that it is in good working order. He keeps records on patrol and troop equipment, makes sure equipment is in good working condition, and issues equipment and makes sure it is returned in good condition. (Appointed by the SPL)

Scribe

The scribe keeps the troop records. He records the activities of the patrol leaders' council and keeps a record of dues, advancement, and Scout attendance at troop meetings. (Appointed by the SPL)

Historian

The historian preserves troop photographs, news stories, trophies, flags, scrapbooks, awards, and other memorabilia. (Appointed by the SPL)

Librarian

The librarian oversees the care and use of troop books, pamphlets, magazines, audiovisuals, and merit badge counselor lists. (Appointed by the SPL)

Chaplain Aide

The chaplain aide works with the troop chaplain to meet the religious needs of Scouts in the troop. He also works to promote the religious emblems program. (Appointed by the SPL)

Den Chief

The den chief works with the Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, and den leaders in the Cub Scout pack. Helps Cub Scouts advance through Cub Scout ranks and encourages Cub Scouts to join a Boy Scout troop upon graduation.

Junior Assistant Scoutmaster

The junior assistant Scoutmaster (JASM) serves in the capacity of an assistant Scoutmaster except where legal age and maturity are required. He must be at least 16 years old and not yet 18. He is appointed by the Scoutmaster because of his leadership ability.

Order of the Arrow Representative

The Order of the Arrow Representative is a youth liaison serving between the local Order of the Arrow (OA) lodge or chapter and his troop. In his unit, he helps meet the needs of the unit and will serve as a communication and programmatic link to and from Arrowmen, adult leaders and Scouts who are not presently members of the Order. (Appointed by the SPL)

Bugler

The Bugler should be able to make appropriate bugle calls, as requested, at troop activities. (Appointed by the SPL) Serving as Bugler can apply towards Positions of Responsibility requirements for Star and Life but not Eagle.

A Message from the Parker Family

Hello Troop 1, we are finally getting settled in Alaska. Nate has gone to camp with some of the local troops and has picked a troop similar to Troop 1. Tonight is a court of honor and he will receive a communication merit badge, thus making Life rank soon. We miss some things of Michigan but we do know that God wants us here. Keep up boy scout contact. (Think high adventure to the NORTH, we have it all volcanoes, mtns., glaciers, ocean, mud flats, etc)

IMPORTANT NEWS and DATES

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TROOP 1 SCOUTS:
It was a busy summer for Troop 1 Scouts! Scout activities included summer camp at Camp Greilick, a Florida Sea Base Crew, a Northern Tier contingent, a Philmont contingent, and attendance at the National Order of the Arrow Conference.

All of these great activities have costs and Troop 1 enters the 2009 - 2010 year with half of our scouts carrying negative balances in their scout accounts. The 2009 mowing season ends soon and our Christmas Wreath sales fund raiser is several months away. After a review of Troop 1 balances, the Troop Committee decided that all scouts with negative account balances must pay the full cost of future activities in advance of participation. Hopefully, this policy will be temporary.

Our Scoutmaster and Advancement Chair want to remind all scouts wanting to receive the merit badges and rank advancements earned over the summer, all completed blue cards and boards of review must be completed and turned in by September 23.

Troop Elections will be completed prior to the Fall Court of Honor. Scouts are encouraged to consider running for a Positions of Responsibility. Work on your speeches now.

Friday, September 11 to Sunday September 13 - Order of the Arrow, Fall Fellowship, Ordeal, & Brotherhood weekend at Camp Greilick. COST IS $25.00

Saturday, September 12 - Community service project with the local NRA chapter. Contact Mr. Arndt for details.

Wednesday, September 16 at 7pm - Troop meeting at Bagley Township Hall. This will be a Hessel Planning Meeting and opportunity to turn in Blue Cards. Scouts should also begin discussions for upcoming elections and positions of responsibility.

Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 20 - Hessel Camporee - Theme is Super Hero. ESTIMATED COST IS $45.00

Wednesday, September 23 at 7pm - Troop meeting at Bagley Township Hall. Troop Elections Begin. Final opportunity to turn in Blue Cards and complete boards of review for recognition at Fall Court of Honor.

EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT

Kevin will finish his Eagle Scout project on Saturday, September 5 at 11:00 AM.

The location is the Remi & Edna Schotte Memorial Park / Otsego Lake Township Park located on Memorial Drive just off Old US 27 South in Waters, Michigan.

The final phase of the project will be erecting cedar pole archways for the entrance and exit from the parks Leonard Jensen Memorial Trail and improvements to the new trail section added in the first phase of the project.

Post hole diggers and spud bars are needed.

Ability to tie square lashings is needed.

Work gloves are also a good idea.
