Troop News and Views

Troop News and Views
Troop 1, Gaylord
December 2009

We wish all of our scouts and scout families a very Merry Christmas and a rewarding scouting experience in the coming year.  We are sending along a few notes for immediate digestion and notes to supplement the troop calendar which our troop scout staff has developed for the coming 10 months. Summary of these activities will be posted by Mr. Neff on the calendar as he gets time.

First, tree sales.  Sales are going very well so far, except that we are not getting participation from a broad enough base of our scout families.  It is essential to have the support of scouts and families selling and supervising the tree lot in regular shifts.  We guess that each family should be taking about 3 shifts the way things are set up now.  Remember, the troop functions on the money we make on the tree sales.  If we don't sell all of the trees, then the troop will not have the funds to operate—that means money for the camperships this summer for each scout going to Greilick, awards, group transportation to places like the submarine Silversides (which the boys have planned for this summer) and a whole bunch of other activities.  All of the other events that we do to raise money go right into the scout's accounts—the troop keeps nothing from those money earning activities

So please lend a hand—especially this weekend.  This may be our biggest weekend and we are the only tree lot in town to boot.    One adult can supervise two or three scouts—and the scouts have fun at the lot loading trees and shoveling snow—and some scouts have even gotten tips this year.  Pop over on the sign up sheets and add your name.

Remember, the key is at Kmart at the service desk.  The green plastic box in the trailer holds the cash and checks.  That box stays in the locked trailer at the end of the shift and the key goes to KMART.  Sandy empties the cash box every day so there is no need to worry there.  HELP—thank you.

Wednesday the 9th meeting is the end of the radio merit badge. If you cannot be there, let me know and I will get your worksheet graded after the class is over.  We will also make special preparation for the troop Christmas party the following week. We also have a board of review that night for several of you.

Stop and congratulate Kevin N. our newest Eagle Scout—as of this month.  Where's the party Kevin—no, at the tree lot won't do.

We are processing the Fire Safety Merit Badges from the Fall Camporee now, which entails transferring the camp cards to blue cards.  Tedious.  But you who camped and do the radio worksheet will get two badges the Spring Court of Honor.
Kiwanis gift baskets are due for loading and packing again—its that time of year.  Judy Doan says she could use help on the 17th for about 2 hours from 6:00PM to 8:00PM4 or 5 scouts will be appreciated by the people who pay our registration fees and send you Boy's Life. That is the day after our Christmas party.  The SPL will be asking so be ready if you need those service hours—and even if you don't.  This year we load food and pack baskets at the Gaylord school system office building in the activity room.  It is behind the Intermediate School and across the street from the United Way building.

No meetings the week of Christmas or New Years—the 23d or the 30th  of December.  The first meeting of the New Year is January 6th.

Meeting Cancellation policy for weather:  we cancel a troop meeting when Gaylord Community school closes for weather.  If there is no school because of weather, then there is no scout meeting.  Otherwise we will cancel with the scout phone fan.  The fan is now being updated by the SPL so if you have a new phone number, let him know at the meeting this week.

Adult Party. Say what?  We are going to have a first ever adult hail and farewell party (no scouts) hosted by the troop January 14th.  This will be an evening dinner (we buy the food, you bring refreshments).  I am guessing 6:30PM to about 8:30 PM.  Now I know that some of you have young kids who need watching---let me know by email how many you have and we will provide a solution to that problem.  We don't want you staying away to watch the younger kids.  All parents are welcome, encouraged, cajoled, begged and otherwise invited to attend.  I promise not to talk long but we do have to recognize some people—outgoing leaders and incoming leaders and get input on the program the scouts put together for the year.  We will be asking for a response at the first troop meeting in January and finalizing the plan at the first committee meeting on January 10th.  Think a Tiger Cub's first words:  Mama, Papa, Buffet.

Headlands, January 15-17. This is a classic Troop 1 Trip and this year should be no exception.  We leave Friday night and come back Sunday morning.  Outdoor activities will include a project for the preserve on Saturday which usually degenerates into anything but service, but indoor activities usually take the form of games, fiddling around (adult terminology) with electronics which are required on this trip.  So tune up your games—Play Stations and Xbox 360's—adults get out the cards.  Sign up on the 6th of Janaury.  We may need an additional driver or two depending on the sign ups.  This year I think we may take the troop trailer for gear and sleds. This is the perfect outing for those adults of you who have trouble reclining on the ground without benefit of a house wrapped around you.  We have a 10 bedroom house and it is heated, so no walking to the porta potty unless you just can't camp without the plastic privy experience—we'll have one delivered for you.

Pinewood Derby Car Races for Pack 1 will be in January.  We usually provide help with set up, car weigh in and running the race.  Stand by.

February 6th-Council wide Klondike Derby;  The annual derby always gets a good showing by our troops.  Kenny and his staff will begin planning in January.  How many sleds to we have now I think 4—so no chance we will be short of snow transportation.  This is council wide and in Cadillac this year—so we will need help with transportation.  More in early January.  You can peek at activities on the Council web site.

February 26-28. Winter camping at the Adirondacks in CG.  Supreme winter experience.  Wood stoves and shelters that sleep 8 each.  We have room for 16 scouts this year plus adults.  A little ice fishing, wood stove cooking, land navigation and for those of us with pounds of hair on our chests, shelter building and sleeping (aka a Polar Bear).  Are you kidding me—sleep outside??  The opportunity is yours if you want the patch.  The shelters are heated by the wood stoves, so its not really like Robert Byrd at the pole in 1923, but its not like the Headlands.  Plastic potty shelter—you bet.

Sledding Party.  Somewhere in here the boys want to have a sledding party.  Ideas on where would be most appreciated.  We are trying Michaywe's old ski hill, the old Ski Village in Waters and (just kidding) Deadman's Hill.  Do the last hill on a saucer and you get the survival merit badge?

March 20th is our Sportsplex Lock In under our departing committee chair Tom Wagar and Venture Leader Jim Marsh and our awards chair Ann Wagar and it looks like another big hit.  This thing has grown from 200 kids to last year's total of 456—that is a lot of syrup flasks Tom.  Band director will be Jim Marsh, as usual.  All night swimming, hockey, skating, bowling and eating.  It is an all-nighter for sure.  Adults in shifts—I bet you can't wait to be asked.  Where else can you get free popcorn.

March 25th 2010 is also the date of adult leader training (indoor) up in Petoskey.  This is the easy part of adult training.  This is one day from 9:00AM to about 3:00PM.  Janice Adams and Jeff Poux went last fall and thought the information presented was very useful.  There are needs for leaders in the troop and that will require the training—will you consider coming along?  The second phase of the training is Outdoor training and it is in April 16 to 18 probably near Gaylordthe outdoor training is much more fun. . . . have I mentioned that?   Plus, we have a nice warm tent for you and cool cooking utensils and pots.  Just ask Kathy Arndt how much fun it was.

April 17th--Lansing Tour.  The boys are planning a Lansing Capital tour on the 17th, as well as a visit to two of the museums that feature the history of our state.  Well we will need drivers, unless Zack, Caleb, Mike O and Kenny can fill the bill.  I can see the heads shaking no already.  More as the event gets firmed up.

100th Anniversary Spring Camporee is April 30 to May 2 this year, and that is when the camping season officially opens.  This will be a big deal this year.  That means that cooking gear comes out of the trailer for the first time, so plan on it now.  This is a Council wide event celebrating the 100th anniversary of scouting and it should be well organized as opposed to some of the seasonals in the past

May 15th is the Opening of Grass Cutting Season.  It also means scout opportunity to earn money for scouting.  This year both Hayes and Old St Mary will need new leaders and we are thinking about how to organize it.  Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Summer Camp for Troop 1 is June 27th to July 3dOur younger scouts should all attend camp with us.  We are going to make a special effort to really coach our scouts this year. Last year all scouts qualified as blue swimmers and thanks to excellent coaching by Janet Hancock every boy earned at least one promotion and many merit badges.  We are thinking about the activities and advancements now and I can assure you that no scout that goes to Camp with us will have a bad experience.  Late February this year we will have a meeting for parents on summer camp-especially the new Weblos 5's we hope to have join us.

Silversides and Michigan Adventure ParkJuly 17 & 18 The Boys are planning on doing the water park and submarine tour, assuming we can rent the submarine.  We are checking.  I can see a few heads with the say what???  This trip takes the form of a day trip to Michigan Adventure Park in Muskegon and in the evening we go down to the harbor and stay overnight on the SS Silversides, a WWII submarine.  It is really a wartimes sub—and it is just like it was during the war. We have the run of the interior and exterior of the sub—really. There is also a museum there.  This really is one of the coolest things we do.  Mr. Oakley is a Navy submariner and he always goes along to explain the pipes and tubes and valves to the boys.  This year "Foghorn" Jeff Riley may also go along—that man can snore, especially when you are trapped in the rear torpedo room with him.

6 to 8 August we are planning a Pigeon River camping trip. This is 3 days of camping in a primitive site with hiking, camp cooking and exploring.  Not much we can say but its an end of summer "almost back to school" trip close to home so travel is not a big issue.

This year's Hessel Trip is September 10th. We don't know the theme yet, but this is one of the highlights of our camping year.  Hessel is near the old National Forest Campground—and there are girl scouts and venture crews there.  Work all day, try to get a girl to dance with you all night.  We hear very good stories about Hessel, but the truth always comes out around the campfire.  It's a scout's life.

Is that enough for now?  I think so.  It is easy to write these ideas on paper, but it takes all of us to make them come true.  Thank you for your support—now and next year.  I appreciate it and the boys appreciate it.

As I write this, Jim Salem is probably out in the storm at the tree lot shoveling out the trees.  We owe Jim a big thanks for all that he has done.  We will have to get him some Tim Neff sunglasses, but for now we send along a big thanks.   Headlands and Daks are firm now, as is the Klondike, so set your  sail for those events now.

Let me go down and see what he is doing.  As always, call with concerns or suggestions.

Yours from the Scenic Trail,

Ken Arndt

Troop News and Views

Troop News and Views
Troop 1, Gaylord
November 2009

We wish all of you scouts and scout families a very happy and joyful Thanksgiving season. We are sending along a few notes to supplement the troop calendar handouts and notes passed out last week.

This Saturday and Sunday is the Troop lock in at the Community Center on South Center in Gaylord. We will be handing out permission slips at the troop meeting this week for guest and Weblos 5 scouts—be sure those are filled out if you bring a guest. Otherwise, most troop members have a part A and C and you should be all set. Bring your electronics and sports gear and we will have a blast. There is a troop permission slip attached to this newsletter for the lock in. Remember no earlier than 8:00PM Saturday the 21st, picked up no later than 8:00AM Sunday the 22d.

The wreaths are in. . . and Picked Up—except for one scout’s. Money can be turned in the week after Thanksgiving. Don’t wait, especially if your clients have not paid in advance. By our count there are 4 organizations selling wreaths this season. If they forget you, you could be left with a wreath and no money. Good job scouts.

Popcorn money must be turned in the week after Thanksgiving—final. Our money is due to STC, so help us out here. You have two weeks to get it delivered—take that good job and turn it into scout account savings.

Kiwanis Swim Party at the Sportsplex the 24th of November. Arrive at 6:45PM, swim for an hour, eat pizza, thank the Kiwanis crew for the party, their support and head home for Thanksgiving. If you need to finish your swim merit badge from summer camp, contact Mr. Oakley and he will assist at the party. We have 5 scouts signed up so far—if you are going next week, email Mr. Arndt or Mr. Neff. If we don’t have at least 10 scouts, I will tell them to cancel—just not enough kids to do all of that work.

Shortwave radio merit badge sessions continue this and next week. Books should be in shortly. We will set up a tabletop at the lock in for those of you who want to pursue that while we are there. I also have some other publications which you might find interesting.

Winter camping at the DAKS, CGATS, January 15-17. This is a classic Troop 1 Trip and the troop sleeps in canvas tent systems with wood stoves. This is a blast—be sure to sign up. Now is the time to ask for that camping gear for Christmas.

February 6th-Council Derby; Cadillac. This is part of the new council wide event program for the 100th anniversary. Like the Klondike but more. Outdoor games, competition and all around good fellowship.Get that gear for Christmas and be ready.

February 27th is our Headlands trip this year. We rent a BIG house on the water in Mac City and party. This is the “bring your electronics” trip of the year. We may have to bring the troop trailer to get all of the gear in. Ask an older scout how they like this trip. Even the adults like this one.

Christmas Party. . . . yes there will be one. Ask your patrol leader.

LOST IT? From week to week we keep a box of stuff that you all leave at the meetings. Books, coats, gym bags, homework. We keep it in the back for each meeting. We have been able to return 1 coat and 2 scout books, two shirts and have given about 25 pounds of clothes to Goodwill. If you lost it at a meeting, we probably have it. If you come to the meetings regularly, you can always retrieve it. We will not chase you down but you are welcome to look at the lost and found at meetings. We will also have the uniform closet at the hall from now on. If you need a shirt or pants, we might have it. Save mom or dad a buck.

Patrol Leader’s Meeting Sunday December 6th at Bagley, 6:30 PM, Troop Committee following at 7:00 PM. Troop staff and patrol leaders should all attend. Among other things, the staff will plan the Christmas party.

Long term dates. The week of June 19th is our summer camp cycle this year. Now is the time to start saving money.

Parents. We thank you for all of your support. Since this is the Holiday season, there are a few reminders to make the New Year go smoother.

Under separate attachment is the schedule for the tree lot sale. Please sign up to attend with your scouts. This event supports the troop for the coming year. All the pins, badges, training and party food and drinks come out of this fund. We will have to work together not only to set up but to operate and tear down.

That’s all for now. This has been handed out as well as posted to the Troop Site. As always, call with questions or comments at 989-732-3307 (office) or 989-732-3464 (night) or email karndt@arndtandassoc.com.

Happy Thanksgiving-

Ken Arndt

TREE LOT SET UP

Scout Families,

I would like to do the tree lot set-up on Wednesday, 11/25/09. We will be meeting in the northwest corner of the Kmart parking lot at 1pm and going until we finish. Hopefully, with enough help, it won't take too long.

I will be bringing the trailer with everything we should need.

We must pick up half of our trees on Saturday, 11/21/09. The other half of our trees will be delivered to K-Mart on Monday, 11/23/09. Any scouts or parents available to help on Saturday or Monday would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Merit Badge Tech 2009

Location: TBAISD Career-Tech Center, 880 Parsons Road, Traverse City, MI 49686

Counselors: All merit badge counselors are CTC staff, former students, Scouters or advisory board members.

Cost: Cost will be $10.00 per scout for all day or $5.00 per session and $5.00 for parents who want lunch. (They too will receive a patch).

Lunch: Lunch will be provided. Vegetarian or special dietary lunches are the responsibility of the Scout and his parent or guardian.

Patches: Each participant will receive a Merit Badge Tech patch.

Overview:
*All boys age 11-17 are welcome to attend.

*Each scout will have the opportunity to work on three different merit badges. A scout will NOT be able to complete a merit badge on this day unless he has done some work on that badge prior to attending Merit Badge Tech 2008. A complete list of those requirements is on line.

*Each scout will be required to bring a blue card signed by his Scoutmaster. Blue cards will also be available and signed by a Scoutmaster if a scout cannot get into the class that he wants.

*Early registration is suggested so a scout can earn the merit badge he wants. If a class is full, our staff will find a vacancy for him. Scouts will be accepted even if they are not pre-registered.

*This day is intended to get a boy started on three merit badges while learning a little about CTC and its programs. It is recommended that scouts download, print and bring with them the merit badge worksheets from www.usscouts.org for badges they wish to work on.

2010 Eagle Scout Scholarship Applications

Applications for Eagle Scout scholarships for 2010 are now available at www.nesa.org.

Eagle Scouts who apply for a college scholarship MUST use the correct application, which is a mandatory requirement. Incorrect applications from prior years will not be accepted. Here is that URL:

http://www.nesa.org/applications.html

This year, just over 4,500 applications were received for the 109 scholarships awarded.

Please help your Eagle Scouts have a chance for a scholarship by linking your Web site to http://www.nesa.org/applications.html. This will give them direct access to the correct applications.

SCOUTMASTER UPDATE

Troop 1
Scenic Trails Council
Gaylord
Well, Autumn is here and so is the fall camporee which is this weekend 9 to 11 October. This year’s camporee will be at Camp Dagett near Petoskey with the theme of “Fire Safety.” Scouts attending will have the opportunity to earn the fire safety merit badge and we will also do the 5 mile hike for those approaching second class.
We will leave Gaylord from Glen’s parking lot at 5:30 Friday night and return at about 11:30 to Glen’s.

Adults going and confirmed so far include Mr. Arndt, Mr. Proux, Mr. Hare and possibly Mr. Neff. We will work out the final details tonight. We may have to have a later ride up to Petoskey since some of our scouts are on one team or another. This weekend we will also have a day visitor from the Weblos 5 den of Pack 1—and his sister. Don’t worry, we are not trying to compete with the Venture Crew—just accommodating the needs of a Weblos Scout family.
There will also be a ropes course available for the older boys at Dagett for an additional fee. More on that tonight. If you are interested, we will have forms tonight.

Plan for wet weather this weekend. An inexpensive rain suit is a better idea than a poncho if you have or can get one. Also, be sure to bring extra clothes.

The cost of the camporee was reduced to $10.00, so the total cost for our PAYGO scouts is estimated at $25.00. Excess money not used will be added to scout accounts when we return.

More in handout form tonight at the meeting, 7:00PM at Bagley Hall. Please make an effort to be there.
The Court of Honor was held Sunday the 4th and the turnout was a little less than expected. It may be that we have to advertise better. Many of you received awards which we will have to present at a later time. One of the things the new troop staff is doing is developing an annual calendar so that you will have a date for each troop event through June of 2010. That means that Tree Sales, the Christmas Party, Andrae’s Cabin Trip and all the rest will be laid out now and confirmed. That will make everyone’s job easier.

We are also looking for input on programs from December to March which would be conducted at Bagley during regular meetings. One we mentioned at the last meeting is the Short wave class during which we earn the Radio merit badge and also have the option of taking a novice ham radio license at the end. We will learn all sorts of things about radio transmitters, antennas, radio waves and a ton more. You can either choose the ham path or the DX path (listening only). Input from you guys is solicited both on this program and on any other ideas you have.
Both popcorn and wreath sales are well underway. Wreath sales started on the 4th. Don’t miss out on these programs—they are a great way to make money for your scout account. Selling wreaths at Christmas is like selling rafts to people treading water. You are a scout, people need a wreath and want to support scouting so the deal is in the bag as long as you are pleasant. Don’t miss out. See Mr. Proux tonight if you don’t have a sale sheet.

Mr. Modrzynski has popcorn. As fast as you can sell it, he can provide it. No waiting for months for your order to come in. Each of you got a mailer from Scenic Trails and our forms, so you should be set to go. 30% of the cost of the popcorn goes to you.
Come to the meeting at 7:00 tonight or call me if you want to go to the camporee and can’t make it. We will make a place for you.

Yours from the Scenic Trail

Coast Guard Open House

Below is a great event for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts! The Coast Guard is having an open house on Sunday, October 4th. Many booths, activities, and refreshments.

The Coast Guard does a lot for Scouting, (they just helped with a new roof on the Trading Post at Camp) and it would be great to see a bunch of Scouts in uniform at this event!

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – We are honored to invite the public and media to an Open House and Coast Guard Appreciation Day at Air Station Traverse City on Sunday, October 4, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Rain or shine (or snow!), meet the real-life ‘Guardians’ of the United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is a truly unique opportunity to get a in-depth look at multi-mission Coast Guard assets and capabilities, tour the facility, learn about the different rescue equipment and learn first-hand why they are known as the “Great Lakes Guardians.” There will be several information booths describing the varied missions and responsibilities of the Coast Guard to include environmental response and measures to address aquatic nuisance species, rescue swimmers, Coast Guard recruiters and others. There will also be an informative ‘State of the Co! ast Guard’ presentation by the unit’s Commanding Officer, Commander Jon Spaner, as well as a Search and Rescue demonstration by the Air Station’s HH-65C Dolphin helicopter and crew at 3:00 p.m.

The following multi-mission Coast Guard assets and booths will be on display:

HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter

HC-144 “Ocean Sentry” Maritime Patrol Aircraft from Mobile, AL

Troop 1 Gaylord - Hessel Weekend Notes

We will post this Wednesday and hand it out at the troop meeting tonight at 7:00 at Bagley Township Hall for those of you going to Hessel with us this weekend. Don’t stay away tonight if you did not make the meeting last week—we want to see you-come on to the meeting.

We will depart from the Glen’s parking lot at 5:30PM on Friday. So far, the following adults are driving: Arndt, Wagar, Adams and Zelkowski. More adults are welcome as the scout spirit moves you—just let us know so we have enough adult food.

Remember that this weekend has the theme: Superheroes. So your costume should be in the planning stages. The SPL will finalize the game we will prepare tonight, so if you are going, be sure to be there at 7:00PM. This campout is a hoot—if you can make it at all, please come. If there is a problem, call me. On Saturday we test scouts at our site with the game we develop, and our scouts travel around to the other sites to go through the games provided by each unit. Yup, competition.

This campout also features a band on Saturday night—and also girls from the surrounding Canadian and American Scout Units. The Canadian girls in scouting are trained to dance by law and can also kill wild animals with their bare hands—so we should be busy and safe. Their scoutmasters may not have these skills.

We expect to head back from Hessel by 11:00AM Sunday and be in Gaylord by 12:30 PM

Things you should bring in addition to your sleeping bag and sleeping mat are:

Flashlight and or headlamp
Two changes of socks and at least one change of underwear
Change of pants, sweatshirt
Class A scout uniform shirt for the Flag ceremonies
Rain Jacket and Pants
Cap
Fall or winter jacket and sweatshirt
Toiletries
An extra pair of closed toed shoes (flip flops, sandals etc are not allowed)
Scout knife (folding knives only-swiss army knife or similar)
Scout Meds for the duration in a plastic bag with instructions
Note: Tonight I will check to be sure we have a current Part A and C on file for each scout—If I don’t I will ask you to complete one at departure. I believe that all scouts who went anywhere have a current set of forms.

There has been some discussion about the up front money for campouts—in this case $45 per scout, when the scout’s account is negative. If your account has a positive balance or has a zero balance, this does not apply to you. I will collect the checks tonight and at the latest Friday at departure if the promise to deliver the check Friday is made by a parent. If no check comes on Friday, and the scout comes to Glen’s, we may restrict further camping and lock in activities until the account is paid off. I am sorry we have to resort to this but our scouts hopefully will begin to take a bit more seriously the fund raising opportunities we offer to our scouts—grass cutting, popcorn sales, wreath sales coming up soon and we can see the scouts earning their way.

The interior of our scout trailer is now complete thanks to Mr. Cromell and it will be at the meeting tonight. We all owe Mr. Cromell a thank you for all of his work.

Adults along on this even include: Mr. Arndt (trained), Mr. Wagar (trained), Mr. Adams (trained), and Mr. Zelkowski (Enrolled adult).

Final Mow of the Year at St. Mary's

Hello Scout Families,

Here's your last chance to earn $$$ for your scout accounts with mowing at St. Mary's. The cemetary needs mowed and cleaned up. That means flower arrangements get thrown away and the place looks good.

If you can mow any time this week or clean up, please let me know when and where you plan to mow. I can mow on Thursday, but if we can get it done before then, it is more than fine with me. :)

Call me at 858-0435 or e-mail me at valerieghouse@yahoo.com

Thanks,
Valerie

Friends of NRA Banquet Help Request

We are still short 3 scouts for tomorrow night the 12th for the Friends of NRA banquet from 5:00 to about 9:00. I realize that OA fellowship is underway, and last weekend of summer for families is an issue, but if you can help, please do so. Eagles hall on Saturday night—5:00PM til about 9:00. We will be delivering bucket gifts and running tickets for the auction. You get dinner too.

We are going to split any gift we get 50% to the scout accounts that help and 50% to the troop. Last year we received about $450.00. I cannot be sure what we will get this year, but you are bound to benefit in these two ways and get service time.

Call me at home—989-732-3464 and leave a message and I will call you back to confirm.
