Boys Life Review
By Donald P.
This article is about a Boy Scout group that goes to Red River Gorge to mountain climb. Some things you need to say when you are climbing:
- “Slack” this means you need more rope. The belayer (the guy hanging onto the rope) gives the climber more rope.
- “Belay-on” the belayer responds meaning you are now allowed to climb further up the rock face.
The more responsible climbers should set examples for the younger ones. It’s important to teach the younger ones to tie rope ends. A common mistake made is climbers think they climb with their arms but really all the weight is on your legs and arms are used for balancing.
If your hands get beat up when you are climbing the easiest way to protect your knuckles is with athletic tape. There is a diagram in the magazine explaining a way to wrap your hand for climbing.
