Wings over Northern Michigan Air Show!

Air Show this weekend! Please arrive at the airshow to camp no earlier than 6:00 pm Friday. They will not be serving dinner Friday night, only crackerbarrel later in the evening. Remember, scouts, to be prepared for weather conditions. Though it seems rain is unlikely, the forecast is calling for sunny skies and temps in the upper 80s, putting sunscreen, hat and water bottles high on the list of the essentials. Sunburn and dehydration are no fun, so remember the scout motto and Be Prepared! Free admittance to the airshow for the scout (because he will be volunteering) and to the parent/leaders who attend and volunteer for a shift parking or helping at camp with the direction of Mr. James Lake who will be the adult in charge this weekend, with the help of the Arndt's, Monte's, Clink's, and Mr. Reynolds who will be doing the grocery shopping. Mr. Arndt will bring the troop trailer. Don't forget your Class A shirt, Class B shirt and any supplies needed for camping. Have fun! Take pictures and send them to scoutmaster if you want them posted.

Mr. Lake has been working with the St. Andrew's Society of Northwestern Michigan, a Scottish cultural society, which will have representatives at the Highland Games, a new event at the Air Show this year. He plans to lead a visit to the event at some point Saturday, and hopefully arrange a time when our Scouts can ask questions about the games and Scottish culture, which could be used toward the American Cultures merit badge. Even if you're not interested in the merit badge, it is still a very cool event to watch.

NYLT

Next week eight of our scouts will be attending National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) at Camp Greilick. Two of those scouts are past Senior Patrol Leaders attending as counselors and the other six scouts are our future leaders who are eager to learn.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

Our troop has been successfully led by scouts who have put the lessons they learned at NYLT into action. This is an important campout to instill leadership skills into the hearts and minds of the boys who will lead the troop in the future.  I am very proud our scouts for all their hard work in contributing to the success of our troop. Please join me in encouraging the scouts who are attending to pay attention, open their hearts and enjoy their week at NYLT. Good luck Kellen, Garrett, Ethan, Nathan, Dominique, Frankie, and the two counselors Andrew and Austin. Troop 1 is proud.

Flag ceremony and mowing tonight.

Tonight is the flag retirement ceremony and flag history ceremony at the Elks Lodge on at 6:00pm.  It is open to the public for the ceremony, and some members of the troop will be there in uniform to help. This would be service time if you are in uniform.

I know that we also have mowing going on tonight, so as long as we have some representation at both it would be great. If you plan to mow, please proceed with that plan.

We didn't talk about this at a meeting but also on Tuesday evening the troop was invited to the Elks Lodge on June 14th at 6:00pm for Flag Day ceremony and retirement.  It is Open to the public for the ceremony, and some members of the troop generally go in uniform to help.
